Membership Information

The Council of Virginia Archaeologists, Inc.

The Council of Virginia Archaeologists (COVA) was founded in 1975 and incorporated in 1996 as an organization dedicated to the preservation and study of Virginia’s archaeological resources. The Council fosters public awareness, knowledge, and support for the preservation of Virginia archaeology; advances knowledge through dissemination of information on Virginia’s archaeological resources; facilitates interaction between the communities of professional and avocational archaeologists in Virginia; and acts as an independent professional advisory group for the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.

Publications

Membership includes subscription to the Council’s biannual newsletter The Virginia Archaeologist and other notifications related to Virginia archaeology and COVA activities. The Virginia Archaeologist contains articles on issues in Virginia archaeology, current research and publications, and information on COVA activities. COVA also sponsors special publications, including a series of volumes on Virginia prehistoric and historical archaeology produced in conjunction with the Archeological Society of Virginia (ASV).

Membership

COVA has two membership categories: active and associate member. Active membership is limited to professional archaeologists working in Virginia who meet COVA’s qualification standards. Active membership confers the right to vote in all elections, to hold office, to serve as a committee member, and to receive the Virginia Archaeologist and all other COVA mailings. Qualifications for active membership in COVA consist of a graduate degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field, as well as the following professional experience and expertise: a) at least one year of accumulated supervisory experience in field and analytical archaeology; b) demonstrable record of carrying research to completion; c) competence in archaeological methods and techniques; d) familiarity with relevant research issues and literature; and e) demonstrable record of professional research on archaeological resources (such as participation in cultural resource management projects or professionally sponsored research) and archaeological administration or management; or a bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field and three years of professional experience and expertise as stated above. Applications for COVA membership are reviewed and summarized by the Membership Committee, and then voted on by the entire membership. Associate membership is open to any individual with an interest in Virginia archaeology, particularly students and professionals in other disciplines. Associate membership confers the right to receive the Virginia Archaeologist and all other COVA mailings and to attend meetings. Associate members may not vote.

Annual Meetings

COVA holds three regular meetings each year (fall, winter, and spring). The secretary notifies members in writing of the date, time, place and agenda for each meeting. The fall meeting is held in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the Archeological Society of Virginia.
